The Story of Symphysis

Sometimes someone else sees the story before you do.

When I first saw this Black Walnut slab, I almost passed it by. My best friend, Kari, saw something in it that I didn't and convinced me to bring it home.

She was right.

Once I began working with the slab, the detail that had been easy to overlook became impossible to miss. Rather than growing from a single trunk, this tree appears to have begun as two separate stems. Over time, the two grew together, leaving two distinct centres surrounded by the same lifetime of growth.

I named it Symphysis — a word for the joining of two separate parts into one.

There is something about knowing that I nearly left this slab behind that makes me smile when I print it. It has since become one of my absolute favourites, and one of the prints I find myself returning to again and again.

Maybe that's part of its story too.

Sometimes the remarkable thing isn't what catches your eye first. Sometimes it's what someone who knows you well insists you take another look at.

FOREST
NOTES

Black Walnut has a habit of shaping the forest around it. Its roots, leaves and husks contain juglone, a naturally occurring compound that can inhibit the growth of some plants nearby.

Not every plant responds to it in the same way. Some species are sensitive to juglone, while many woodland plants have evolved alongside Black Walnut and grow perfectly well in its company.

That makes the space surrounding a Black Walnut part of its story. Long before people valued the tree for its dark wood, strength and beauty, it was already influencing the small community of plants growing beneath and around it.

And there is something particularly fitting about that for Symphysis — a tree whose own form records what can happen when two lives grow beside one another for long enough.

Trees don't only record the lives they have lived. Sometimes they record the lives they have touched.
