The Story of The Long View

Some trees ask us to slow down.

Unlike a perfectly round cross-section, The Long View doesn't reveal itself all at once. Your eye naturally travels from one end of the slab to the other, discovering subtle shifts in growth, changing grain patterns, and decades of quiet history along the way.

Sometimes the only way through the hardest years is to take the long view.

That thought has become deeply personal to me. My own journey through illness has taught me that healing rarely follows a straight path, and that hope is often found not in today's progress, but in the direction you're moving over time. Like the rings of a tree, recovery is built one season at a time. Looking back, the changes become visible in ways they never seemed to in the moment.

Perhaps that's why this slab speaks to me.

It reminds me that growth isn't always dramatic. Sometimes it is simply the quiet accumulation of one more year, one more ring, one more step forward.

Black walnut doesn't just grow tall — it grows deep. Young trees develop a strong taproot that can reach far into the soil, helping anchor the tree and giving it access to moisture below the surface.

As the tree matures, that deep root system is joined by an extensive network of lateral roots. Together they help a mature black walnut withstand wind, drought and changing conditions above ground.

Much of what keeps a tree standing is the part we never see.
