The Story of Ambrosia

Some trees reveal their stories immediately.

Others keep them hidden beneath the surface.

I chose this maple for one reason: I knew it had been home to ambrosia beetles. Woodworkers prize "ambrosia maple" for the beautiful markings those tiny insects leave behind, and I couldn't help wondering whether their hidden work would appear in a Wooden Ink print.

It did.

Radiating outward from the centre are delicate star-like bursts where the beetles travelled through the wood long before the tree became a print. They're subtle at first, but once you notice them, you begin seeing them everywhere—tiny signatures left by creatures that spent their lives quietly shaping the tree from within.

The slab itself is equally compelling. Its dramatic central split, sweeping grain, extra branch inclusion at the top and irregular outline make it one of the most technically challenging prints I've produced. Every pull requires careful adjustments to ensure the ink reaches the paper evenly without losing the character of the wood.

Sometimes the most beautiful stories aren't written by a single author.

Sometimes they're collaborations between a tree... and the tiny lives it quietly supported.

NOTES

Ambrosia maple isn’t a separate species of maple. Its distinctive markings are created when tiny ambrosia beetles tunnel into the wood, carrying fungi with them that stain the surrounding grain.

The beetles don’t actually feed on the wood. Instead, they cultivate the fungi inside their tunnels as a food source. As the fungus spreads into the surrounding tissue, it creates the dark streaks, wisps and bursts that give ambrosia maple its unmistakable character.

What was once considered a defect in lumber has become something many woodworkers actively seek out — precisely because no two patterns are ever quite the same.

In this case, the story written into the wood belongs to more than the tree alone.

Even the smallest lives can leave the deepest marks.
