Ash is a ring-porous wood. At the beginning of each growing season, the tree produces a band of large vessels designed to move water efficiently through the new wood. Later in the season, growth shifts to denser, more fibrous tissue. The abrupt transition helps give ash its remarkably distinct annual rings.
That structure does more than make the rings easy to see. The combination of porous earlywood and dense latewood contributes to ash's characteristic grain — and to the strength and shock resistance for which the wood has long been valued.
Ash is also unusual among many common hardwoods in the arrangement of its branches, leaves and buds: they typically occur in opposite pairs rather than alternating along the stem. Its winged seeds, called samaras, hang in clusters and are dispersed by the wind.
Those characteristics can tell us what kind of tree we're looking at. But the rings can preserve something else entirely: changes in the way an individual tree grew. Multiple centres, shifts in growth direction and irregular grain can remain recorded inside the same piece of wood long after the tree is gone.

Every Wooden Ink print begins with a reclaimed tree and is hand-pulled from the original slab.
The Original Slab
The slab is the original manuscript. Carefully cut from reclaimed timber. Every print is one interpretation of the story it spent a lifetime writing.
Every print is inked and pulled by hand using the original slab. No digital reproductions. No automated printing. Each pull carries the subtle character of the process.
No two prints are exactly alike. Because your print is hand-pulled from reclaimed timber, slight variations in ink and pressure combine naturally to make your print uniquely yours.

And there’s more in the studio than you’ll find online. Wooden Ink holds dozens of reclaimed tree slabs in different species, shapes and sizes whose prints aren't currently offered on the website. If you're looking for something entirely different, tell us what you have in mind — we may already have the perfect tree waiting in the studio.
If you have a meaningful tree or piece of reclaimed timber you'd like transformed into an original print, we'd love to hear its story.
